National Geographic World atlas for young explorers

National Geographic, 2007, 978-1-4263-0088-2

Very few of us get to travel to all the continents that there are on this extraordinary planet of ours. We may be able to visit a few places, but there are always so many more countries that we would like to explore. And so we turn to our televisions, our computers, and books to take a look at distant mountain ranges, colorful cities, picturesque villages, and awe inspiring natural wonders.

This is the kind of book that armchair travelers will love. It is packed with informative articles, fantastic annotated illustrations and photographs, maps of all kinds, tables, and charts. In addition most of the pages have a feature that can be enjoyed on the Internet. All readers have to do is to go to the book’s website and there they can enjoy videos, audio clips, articles, games, and photographs.

The book is divided into eight main sections. It begins with an introductory section where readers can learn how to use the book and how to understand the maps. They will also be able to familiarize themselves with maps and articles about our planet, the “physical world,” “the oceans,” and the “political world.”

After this readers can ‘visit’ North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and its environs, and Antarctica.

Each continent section begins with an introductory piece, and it them moves on to the maps with their accompanying articles. On all these pages readers will find little icons indicating that there are items on the Internet that they might like to explore that are associated with the map, photo, illustration, or article that they have been looking at.

Without a doubt this fantastic large format book will take readers to places that they did not even know existed. They will not only find reams of interesting information in the book, but they will also be able to expand upon this information by visiting the book’s website.
