My Kindergarten

Rosemary Wells

Picture Book

Ages 4 to 6

Hyperion, 2004, 142311248-2

Going to school for the first time can be a little scary. What will we have to learn? What rules will we need to know? Will the other kids like us? These are just a few of the questions that we ask ourselves as we contemplate the first day of school. Thankfully we do not have to go through this process alone. In this wonderful book we are going to join Miss Cribbage and her kindergarten class, working our way through the school year with them, from the first day of school to the last day.

The author begins by introducing Miss Cribbage and by presenting all the young students in her class. Our guide, Emily the bunny, quickly makes friends with Diane Duck, and the two of kick off their friendship by singing a number song.

Next the class begins to collect words for their word board. Every week the class will have a new word to add to their collection. This week the word they are working on is and. Miss Cribbage asks her students to come up with some other words that begin with the letter A.

And this is just the beginning. Later in the month of September Emily and her classmates look at “patterns and designs,” and then they make preparations for their Back to School Night celebration.

With rhymes, activities, stories, and so much more we work our way through the school year, month by month. Kindergarteners will learn about maps, nature, holidays, foods, the weather, and so much more. Indeed there is something for everyone on these pages, and young readers will greatly enjoy sharing Emily’s school activities with her. Who knew that school could be so much fun?

With her customary élan, her creativity, and her wonderful illustrations, Rosemary Wells takes the fear out of the kindergarten experience, and in its place she gives her readers great stories, entertaining activities, and lots of interesting information. Young kindergarteners will enjoy sharing this book with their families and with their classmates. They will always know that Emily and her friends as there for them in good times, and also at those times when things don’t go quite as they should.

Rosemary Wells is a prolific author illustrator who has brought us such beloved characters as McDuff, Yoko, and Max and Ruby.
