My Dear Noel: The Story of a Letter from Beatrix Potter
Jane Johnson
Non-Fiction, Picture Book
Ages 4 to 7
Penguin, 1999, 0-8037-2050-5
Noel is very excited because Miss Potter is coming to visit his family and when she does arrive, at long last, he and his brothers and sisters have a wonderful time. Not only does Miss Potter bring them gifts but she also draws pictures for the children, tells the most wonderful jokes, and all in all is a great friend.
Not long after Miss Potter leaves Noel’s house Noel gets very sick indeed. Miss Potter is far away in Scotland and cannot come to visit the bed bound little boy but what she does do is to write him a very special letter. Because she does not know what to write to him about she sends him a little story instead about “four little rabbits whose names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail, and Peter.”
Thus it was that Peter Rabbit was born. Some years after Miss Potter wrote this special letter to Noel, she decided that she would try to get the little story published. She borrowed Noel’s original letter and turned it into a longer tale complete with color illustrations. Today Peter Rabbit and the other animal characters who populate the pages of Beatrix Potter’s wonderful little books are household names and dear friends to children all over the world.
Simply written with beautiful soft and warm illustrations in ink and watercolor, this book is sure to delight Beatrix Potter fans of all ages. Jane Johnson captures the joy of the children as they wait for their wonderful friend to visit them and delights the reader with the story of how Peter Rabbit came to be.
Readers can see a facsimile of the original letter that Beatrix wrote to Noel in the front and back endpapers of the book.
