Mommy do you love me?

Jeanne Willis

Illustrated by Jan Fearnley

Picture Book

Ages 4 to 6

Candlewick Press, 2008, 978-0-7636-3470-4

A little chick asks his large feathery mother is she loves him. Of course she tells him that she loves him “more than words can ever say.” But what if the chick makes an ugly face? What if he covers himself with mud? His mother does not mind these things. She knows that he is still her “sweet Little Chick underneath” no matter what he looks like on the outside.

When Little Chick doesn’t win a race his mother gives him a rose to show him how dear he is to her; and when he drops the rose his mother gave him, she tells him that she still loves him.

Little Chick is so pleased that his mother loves him so much he makes a real racket. Even when his mother asks him to be quiet, Little Chick gets louder and louder. Finally Little Chick’s mother has to yell at her little son. Does she still love him now?

There are times when all children wonder if their mother still loves them. Will she still love them if they break a glass or tell a fib? Will she still love them if they are annoying? This book will show children that no matter what they do, their mothers will love and treasure them. Their mothers may get annoyed. They may even shout once in a while, but the love that they have for their child or children will never go away.

Jan Fearnley has created delightful characters for this story. Little Chick is funny and easy to identify with, while his mother is comforting in her plump featheriness. Together the text and the illustrations work together beautifully to create a story which children and their mother’s are sure to enjoy.
