Maps and Mapping

Jinny Johnson

Non-Fiction Novelty Book (Series)

Ages 5 to 7

Kingfisher, 2007, 978-0-7534-6062-7

I’d like you to mean Suki West. She is a cartographer and she is going to explain how maps are made. She is also going to show us all kinds of interesting things about maps and the mapping process.

Suki begins by explaining what maps are, and why we need them. She then goes on to tell us about the history of maps and map making. You might be amazed to learn that the earliest world map was created 2,500 years ago in Babylon, and the ancient Romans also used maps to help them travel around their vast empire. On their maps the Romans sometimes even went so far as to indicate where travelers could stay as they traveled across the country.

Making maps in the past was not easy because map makers did not have the tools we have today. Because of this their maps were often very rough affairs that were filled with errors. Of course trying to draw an accurate map of the world is made all the more difficult because our planet is round. How can you turn a round globe into a flat map?

Suki then goes on to describe the different kinds of maps there are, how they are made, and how they are used.

With Suki as their guide children will have wonderful time learning about maps and cartography. The author combines photographs, illustrations, and novelty features to great effect, and the well written and to-the-point text is easy to follow. Children will enjoy lifting flaps and unfolding maps as they accompany Suki on their learning journey.

This is one in a series of books in the Inside Access series.
