What is a map and why are maps useful? These are just a few of the questions that we are asked in this splendid book. Of course the author provides us with the answers. She explains that maps “show us what places look like from above.” They can show a town, a country, or even the whole world. They help us to find places, to learn about other parts of the world, and to appreciate how diverse life on our planet is.

After explaining what maps are, the author goes on to show her readers street maps, town maps, country maps, and world maps. She explains what lines of latitude and longitude are and how these lines can be used to fix a location on a map.

Next the author describes how maps were made in the past and how they are made today.

This Science Kids title concludes with four activities that children are sure to want to try for themselves. Teachers might like to use this title in their classroom to help their students understand what maps are, and parents might like to us the title to supplement what their children are learning at school or for home schooling purposes.

With a carefully written text, many definitions, plenty of annotated illustrations and photographs, and numerous maps to examine, this is perfect text for young would-be explorers.
