Little Rabbit’s New Baby

Harry Horse

Picture Book (Series)

Ages 4 to 6

Peachtree Publishing, 2008, 1-56145-431-1

Little Rabbit is in a big state of excitement. His Mama is going to have a baby and Little Rabbit wants the baby to be born so that he can play with the new arrival. He is delighted when his grandma tells him that he will be “the best brother a baby could have.”

At last the big day arrives. Mama goes to the hospital to have the baby and then Little Rabbit and Papa go to visit. When they arrive at the hospital they are amazed to see that Mama has had not one but three babies.

Back at home Little Rabbit is eager to be a good big brother. He takes the babies out in their baby carriage, he hugs, kisses, and tickles them and he even wants to share his bed with them, but he is told that the babies need to sleep in their cradle. Early the next morning Little Rabbit gets the babies up and tries to feed them but unfortunately nothing he tries seems to work. Later he decides to play with them and his efforts turn out to be an even bigger disaster than the feeding was. Mama is very annoyed with Little Rabbit for making the babies cry, and Little Rabbit is very upset because Mama is spending all her time worrying about the babies. What about him? Now Little Rabbit wants to have nothing more to do with the babies but it turns out that they really love their big brother and want to be with him as much as possible.

In this delightful picture book the joys, and woes, of becoming an older sibling are explored in a refreshing and loving way. Harry Horse’s beautiful illustrations give readers an inside look at the marvelous rabbit world that he has created, and Little Rabbit is, without a doubt, one of the most delightful rabbit characters to appear in children’s literature.
