There can’t be many places left on this planet where the name of Harry Potter is not known. Readers of all ages, since the first Harry Potter book came out in 1997, have been fascinated by the world that J.K Rowling created. The release of a new book in the series was waited for eagerly by fans, and both the audiobooks and the movies about Harry Potter have been enormously successful. Who is J.K Rowling and how did she come to write these marvelous books?

The daughter of an engineer and a housewife, Joanne (Jo) Rowling always loved to tell stories. Often she shared her tales with her sister Di and her friends, and she wrote her first tale when she was still very young. In 1990 twenty-four Jo was on a train going to London when the beginnings of Harry’s story came to her. Eagerly she began to plan out her story, her characters, and the background for the magical world which would, in the future, captivate millions of readers.

For a while Jo went to Portugal to teach English and it was there that she met her first husband. Her daughter Jessica was born in Portugal and this little girl would become the driving force behind Jo’s efforts to turn her writing into a career. When her marriage collapsed Jo went back to England and, for some years, had a hard time of it. Jo struggled to survive, trying to get her teacher’s certificate while she did her best to provide for and raise Jessica.

Somehow Jo found time to work on her Harry Potter book and in 1996 the manuscript for her story was accepted by a publisher in London. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone appeared in bookshops the following year and what followed changed Jo’s life forever.

Readers who have burned the midnight oil to read the Harry Potter books will really enjoy reading this biography. Here, at least, we will get the facts about the real J.K Rowling and her life. Here we will discover how Harry Potter came into being and how his success affected the life of his creator.

This is just one of many books in the Biography series. Other titles in this collection explore the lives of Bill Gates, Mark Twain, Malcolm X and others.
