Iris and Walter: Lost and Found

Elissa Haden Guest

Illustrated by Christine Davenier

Fiction (Series)

Ages 6 to 9

Harcourt, 2004, 0-15-205662-9

Iris has made a special button necklace and she is very excited because she is going to be taking it to school for show-and-tell. She is therefore very upset when her baby sister Rosie breaks it. Even when the necklace is restrung Iris is still upset. Sometimes it is very hard having a little sister. Thankfully Iris’ best friend Walter soon takes her mind off her problems. Walter brings a harmonica to school for show-and-tell and he tells the class all about how his grandmother is teaching him how to play the instrument.

Being a wonderful friend Walter not only teaches Iris how to play a little song on the harmonica but he also lets her borrow the harmonica for the night. Iris is delighted to show her family the harmonica and everyone is thrilled to hear her play it. Baby Rose likes the little musical instrument too.

The next morning Iris is horrified when she discovers that she cannot find the harmonica anywhere. Surely Baby Rose has hidden it somewhere. What is Walter going to think when he learns that she has lost his precious harmonica? What is his grandma going to think?

Fans of the Iris and Walter series will greatly enjoy this charming story. With its short chapters, its many illustrations, and its sympathetic story line, children with younger siblings will find that they will instantly understand how Iris is feeling. This is a perfect book for the young reader who is eager to read on his or her own.

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
