Iris and Walter and the birthday party

Elissa Haden Guest

Illustrated by Christine Davenier

Fiction (Series)

Ages 6 to 9

Harcourt, 2006, 978-0-15-205388-8

In just five days it is going to be Walter’s birthday and Iris and his other friends have been invited to his birthday party. Iris is very excited and she goes to see Walter as soon as she gets his invitation. It is going to be a wonderful celebration with “cake and ice cream and horseback riding.”

Iris and Walter decide that they are going to make a special effort to make Walter’s horse, Rain, look pretty for the party. On the day before the party they give her a bath and brush her coat and mane. Iris also gives Rain a lovely decoration to wear around her neck which Iris made herself. By the time they are finished Rain looks perfect, and very round. Rain is going to have a baby sometime in the not too distant future.

Now all the children have to do is to wait for the big day to arrive.

Birthday parties are always a big cause for excitement for children. In this charming book Elissa Haden Guest perfectly captures the anticipation that Walter and Iris feel. And though things don’t go quite as planned on day of the party, it is a day which all the children will never forget.

Perfectly written for the newly independent reader, this title from the Iris and Walter series is a joy to read and to share.

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
