If I could: A Mother’s Promise

Susan Milord

Illustrated by Christopher Denise

Picture Book

Ages 2 to 5

Candlewick Press, 2008, 978-0-7636-2348-7

A mother raccoon is spending the day with her little son. Together they have a picnic on the beach, the collect “treasures” on the sands and in the pools. All day they enjoy the sun until it sets, and then the mother raccoon sings a little song under the stars. Then, hand in hand, they go home to have their dinner and to get ready for bed.

Throughout the day the mother thinks of all kinds of amazing things that she would do for her son if she could. Among other things she would “swim the deep in search of treasure for you to keep.” She would “paint the flowers to brighten all your waking hours.” And, as the day winds down, she thinks of what her little boy means to her.

Mothers will love sharing this magical book with their little sons and daughters – especially at bedtime. Its gentle rhyming words of love and soft acrylic illustrations perfectly capture the feelings that the mother has for her child.
