Icecore: A Carl Hobbes Thriller

Matt Whyman

Fiction (Series)

Ages 12 and up

Simon and Schuster, 2007, 1-4169-4907-0

Carl Hobbes is not a criminal in the regular sense of the word but he has done something incredibly stupid – he has hacked into the security systems of Fort Knox and now gold bars from the repository are turning up in all kinds of undesirable places. Carl agrees to go and talk to the Americans and to tell them exactly what he did and how he did it. He never imagines that he will be taken to Icecore, a detention camp within the Arctic Circle.

Hobbes’ experiences at Icecore are worse that he ever thought his interrogation could be. His guards are terrifying, as are his fellow detainees. He is locked in a cage and it is soon clear that his interrogators do not believe that he only hacked into the system and that he worked alone. They believe that he was a part of something bigger and that he was working with others. How else did the gold end up in the hands of terrorists?

Then Hobbes meets the person who actually stole the gold. Worse still he finds out that this person played him from the start, encouraging him to hack into Fort Knox in the first place. How could he have been so gullible? Of course the bigger question now is how is he going to get out of his current mess? No one believes that he wasn’t in on the theft and he could end up going to prison for a very long time.

Readers who enjoy a good thriller will greatly enjoy this carefully crafted story. Full of surprises and unexpected twists, readers will find themselves unable to put this book down once they have started reading.
