Without a doubt Cicely Mary Barker is one of the world’s foremost experts on fairies and now she has put together a very special book to help those of us who are less experienced than she is to be able to get glimpses of these marvelous little creatures.

After careful research Cicely has been able to determine that there are five main areas where fairies like to build their homes. These are: in the tree tops, on the forest floor, in the garden, by in wayside, and in the marshes.

For each of these five habitats Cicely has created an incredible three dimensional ‘description’ to help us learn how to see fairies in that habitat and to be able to better appreciate how fairies use nature to keep themselves hidden. Fairies are very shy creatures and do not like to be seen by humans so you need to keep your eyes open and look for clues that will tell you that fairies are about. For example a trail of fairy dust is a clear indication that you are near a fairy abode.

If you are looking near the forest floor you might look for twigs attached to the side of a tree trunk which could be a set of fairy steps. A ring of mushrooms is a sure indication that fairies cannot be far away. Look for knotholes in a tree stump which fairies might use as a doorway to their home.

Gardens are the perfect place for fairies who love beautiful things. If you see petals hanging on a spider’s web on a summer’s day, then you know that you have fairies in your garden who have been doing their washing that day.

Hedgerows are marvelous places for fairies as there are so many nooks and crannies to hide in. As there are often lots of butterflies in hedgerows, fairies find it easy to flutter about in amongst the butterflies and are thus less visible to humans.

In marshy places you might be lucky enough to see small footprints in the mud which will tell you that fairies are living close by. Look for little boats made out of large leaves and if you are very lucky you might even see the fairy King and Queen who live in the marshlands.

Without a doubt this book is a must for anyone who has a fondness for fairies. With five gorgeous double page spread pop-ups, numerous little books to look at, and other cunning surprises, this is a treasure for children and collectors alike. By combining Cicely Mary Barker’s famous fairy illustrations with extraordinary illustration and photograph collages, we are taken on a magical journey to five beautiful fairy places full of secrets and wonders.
