A boy is walking along the sidewalk when he sees a little ant down by his feet. The boy raises his foot to squash the ant when the ant pleads for his life. The boy thinks that there is nothing wrong with squashing the ant, after all “anyone knows that ants can’t feel.”

The ant invites the boy to “come down close” for he is sure that the boy will see that they are not in fact that unalike. Like the boy the ant has a family. Furthermore, he has many baby ants who depend on him.

The boy thinks that ants are pests, for that is what he has been told. The ant explains that ants only take crumbs and they need those crumbs to survive. Surely the boy can spare just a few crumbs to feed a whole town of ants?

In this excellent picture book the authors invite children to consider that all living things have the right not to be squished or killed, They all have feelings, and they all have a purpose . Just because we are bigger does not mean that that gives us the right to impose our will on creatures that are smaller than us.

With a simple rhyme and clever pictures which present things from both points of view, this is a picture book which is sure to promote lots of discussion and thought.

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
