It is a snowy January day when Henry sees a sign in a shop window announcing a snowman contest. That very Saturday there is going to be a contest in the park and anyone can enter. Henry is very excited and he runs home to tell his father about the contest. When he gets to his house, Henry finds his father in the basement. His father, who is painting an old garden chair, is covered with green paint. He is thrilled to hear the news about the contest, and when Saturday arrives Henry, his father, and his dog Mudge go to the park.

There are lots of people in the park who are eager to try their luck in the contest. There are also a lot of dogs there, and Mudge has a splendid time getting to know a few of them. The dogs are as varied and unique as the snowmen that the contestants build. Henry cannot help being a little worried. What if the judges don’t like the snowman that he and his father built.

In this amusing and entertaining seasonal early reader, children will get to enjoy yet another easy-to-relate-to adventure with Henry and Mudge. Dog lovers will surely appreciate the dog interactions, and Cynthia Rylant’s writing style is perfectly suited to young readers who are just getting comfortable with reading on their own.
