Harvey the Painter
Lars Klinting
Picture Book (Series)
Ages 3 to 5
Kingfisher, 1998, 0-7534-5955-8
Today Harvey is going to paint a cupboard and little Chip is going to help him. The beavers decide that they will paint the cupboard lots of colors. That way they “don’t have to choose” just one color which can be hard to do.
They begin the job by preparing the room and getting together their materials. Then the cupboard has to be painted with primer so that the wood does not show through the paint. Next they begin to paint with the colors. In fact they use a lot of colors and when they find that they don’t have any green paint they mix their own my combining blue and yellow paint. The end result is a colorful cupboard that they are both pleased with.
Children who love to help out in the work shop will find this book both entertaining and useful. They will learn how to go about painting a piece of furniture and at the same time they will enjoy sharing Harvey and Chip’s story. At the back of the book the author includes a section on painting tips and another section on how to blend your own colors to make your own paint shades.
