Harvey the Carpenter

Lars Klinting

Picture Book (Series)

Ages 3 to 5

Kingfisher, 1996, 0-7534-5912-4

Harvey the beaver is going to make a toolbox today. Everything he needs to make the toolbox is in his workshop but the place is in such a mess that he can’t always find what he is looking for. At the moment he is having trouble finding his plans. At last he finds the plans and after studying them carefully he gets to work.

First he measures his boards and draws his lines on them with a pencil. Then he uses a saw to cut along the lines that he drew. Next he uses a drill to make some holes in the wood pieces that he cut. To make the wood smooth he rubs the wood with sandpaper and a rasp.

Finally all the pieces of the box are ready to be put together. Once his project is complete Harvey will have a place to put all his tools so they won’t get lost and misplaced.

In this easy to follow “Handy Harvey” title Lars Klinting shows his young readers how a simple woodwork project is planned out, put together, and completed. Harvey is the kind of charming animal character most children will be able to identify with and he shows his young audience how easy it is to make something with wood – and how rewarding it is too.

This is just one in a series of titles about Handy Harvey.
