H.I.V.E. The Overload Protocol

Mark Walden

Fiction (Series)

Ages 12 and up

Simon and Schuster, 2007, 1-4169-3571-1

Things have calmed down at H.I.V.E. (The Higher Institute of Villainous Education) and repairs are underway to fix the damage wrought by the rampaging monster plant which caused so much havoc not long ago. Otto Malpense is not quite so consumed with plans on how to escape from his unique school though he has not given up on the idea either. Then he is given an unexpected opportunity to leave the island. His friend Wing Fanchu learns that his father was killed in a lab accident. The lab was one of the many facilities run by G.L.O.V.E., the Global League of Villainous Enterprises. One of G.L.O.V.E.’s other projects is H.I.V.E. Wing needs to go to Tokyo for the funeral and it is decided that Otto can go with him. Needless to say, Otto and Wing will be under strict supervision and Raven, Max Nero’s right hand, will be going along to make sure that the boys stay out of trouble.

What the boys don’t know is that one of the members of G.L.O.V.E., a man who calls himself Cypher, is determined to undermine Nero’s place in the organization. Cypher thinks that H.I.V.E., Nero’s pet project, is redundant and he wants to shut the school down. So, just before they leave the safe house in Tokyo to go to the funeral, Cypher attacks. Raven is unable to hold off Cypher’s ninja assassins and in the battle Wing gets shot. Not only that, but Cypher then carries away Wings body.

Enraged by Cypher’s treachery, Nero tells Raven to pursue him. Because of Cypher’s continual interference, Otto ends up accompanying her and together they travel to Cypher’s secret headquarters. What they find there appalls them both. Cypher is building an army of strong and powerful robots. Clearly Cypher plans on taking over G.L.O.V.E. At the very least. Why is he doing this? It this just a lust for power or does he have a more sinister motive for his actions?

In this second H.I.V.E. book secrets are revealed and a new plot of truly frightening proportions is discovered. The ‘good guys’ turn out to be the villains and vice versa, and the plot takes numerous swings which are both exciting and which will leave readers eager for more.
