Gus, his parents, and Grandpa are going fishing for the day and as Gus has never fished before, he is very excited about this new adventure. Gus's father also knows how to fish though it seems that he is more interested in learning how to use his new fishing rod than in catching anything. Gus's mother doesn't like to fish at all but she does like to have
"a picnic by a beautiful lake."
At first when Gus tries to cast his line he makes an awful mess of things. It is frustrating but with Grandpa's help Gus does get the hang of things and is able to cast his lie very well after a while. Then there is a new problem, can Gus catch a fish? Just before lunch he almost catches a fish but he loses it, and the lure, before he can bring his catch in. It is a terrible disappointment. Will Gus ever be able to catch a fish the way Grandpa can?
For all those budding young anglers and indeed for all those children who have tried something new and been discouraged, this chapter book will offer encouragement and hope that they too can catch a fish, ride a bike, swim, write their name, or do anything else that they have difficulty doing. Gus's grandpa is always there for Gus offering advice and encouragement. If only we all had a grandpa like the one Gus has.
