Gus and Grandpa love getting and reading the mail. One day is a particularly good mail day because Grandpa gets a biscuit mix offer (which he sends off for) and a lottery entry (which he fills in). Best, and funniest, of all is the fact that Grandpa's dog Skipper gets some mail too!
The next day though is a dark one for the whole family for Gus finds out that Grandpa had a heart attack in the night and had to go to the hospital. It is a frightening time for the little boy because he loves his Grandpa very much and worries about what is going to happen to him.
Going to the hospital to see Grandpa for the first time is hard for Gus and he really isn't sure that he wants to see his beloved Grandpa with tubes in his arm and nose. Will his Grandpa be different now or will he be the same Grandpa that Gus has always known and loved, the man who loves biscuits and gravy and the man who thinks its is great that a dog gets mail.
Told with great compassion and understanding, the author explores the very difficult topic of a child dealing with his much loved grandfather's illness. Focusing on Grandpa's recovery and all the things that Gus is able to do for Grandpa while he is in hospital, Claudia Mills empowers Gus and takes some of the helplessness out of the whole situation. With four short chapters and lots of warm pictures this is a perfect early reader for children getting used to reading on their own.

ACTION ALERT!

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
