Grizzly Dad

Joanna Harrison

Picture Book

Ages 4 to 6

Random House (UK), 2008, 978-0-385-61019-3

One morning Dad wakes up in an awful mood and after growling and snarling at all the members of his family, he goes back to bed for a while. Later the eldest son in the family goes to wake Dad up and he discovers that Dad is not longer a human, he is a enormous, hairy grizzly bear.

At first the boy is, naturally, a little cautious around his bear father, but it is not long before he is saying “Don’t worry Dad” and “I’ll look after you.” And this is just what the boy does. It is not an easy task either, because the grizzly bear has terrible manners and he makes a “horrible mess” in the house.

Then Dad and his son go to town and they have a terrific day together.

This amusing picture book will delight children who have, on occasion, experienced their own grizzly dads. It goes to show that even when they are grumpy and when they are having a hard day, dads are terrific people to be with.
