  When Georgia was a young girl living on her father’s farm in Wisconsin, she loved to explore the shapes of the things that she saw around her. She would take home flowers, stones, and sticks – much to the surprise of her brother and her sisters who could understand why anyone would want to do such a thing. But for Georgia the shapes of things, and the open spaces between them, were fascinating. Even though Georgia’s family thought that she had “silly notions,” she decided that she was going to be an artist one day.

  And this is just what she did. She moved to New York City and she continued her explorations into the shapes and spaces that she saw around her. She did studies of shells and cityscapes, and then, when she went to the desert out west, she discovered a whole new world, and a new set of shapes, to look at and to paint.

As with her other books about artists, Jen Bryant gets to the heart of the matter, finding out what made Georgia O’Keeffe tick and what excited her.
