Malcom Rose

Fiction (Series)

Ages 12 and up

Houghton Mifflin, 2007, 978-0-7534-5971-3

Luke Harding has only just passed his exam and got his Forensic Investigator (FI) qualification when he is called to his first murder scene; a boy in his school his been murdered – shot with a bow and arrow. With his trusty Mobile Aid to Criminal Law or Malc to help him, Luke sets about trying to solve the crime. The youngest FI to ever qualify soon finds himself going off in all kinds of directions trying to figure out why the boy was killed and then another person on the school campus is murdered. This time the victim is a staff member and the lady is murdered with snake venom.

Luke is convinced that the murders are linked but he cannot find anything to connect them – except himself. Malc keeps reminding him that he, Luke, is the best suspect there is. Of Luke knows that he is not responsible but at the same time none of his other suspects pan out. When a third person – yet another student – is ruthlessly murdered, Luke becomes convinced that someone is framing him. Who could be responsible for this cleverly planned and carefully executed operation, and how is Luke going to catch the person behind it before it is too late?

In this futuristic thriller, Malcom Rose takes his readers to a world where the lives of people are very controlled. Their careers are planned by The Authorities, and even their future mates are decided for them. Instead of having a human sidekick to help him in his investigations, sixteen year old Luke has a machine, a robot like computer which can investigate a crime scene in just seconds and yet which cannot understand that Luke is in love with a girl which The Authorities will not let him “pair” with.

This first book in the “Traces” series is just the beginning of what promises to be a very interesting journey into a fascinating time and place.

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
