Sophie is miserable for once again her beloved stuffed rabbit friend, Felix, has disappeared. She and Felix were playing outside on a breezy day pretending to be intrepid hot air balloon explorers. Sophie had placed Felix in a basket under two balloons and had let him float up into the sky above her. Unfortunately the tethering string slipped from Sophie's fingers and Felix floated up, and up, and up until he was gone. Though Sophie and her father searched for Felix all over town, Felix was no where to be found. Sophie just has to hope that Felix's many travel experiences will help him deal with whatever challenges and adventures come his way.
Sophie soon gets a letter from Felix in which he describes what happened to him when she let go of the tethering string, and sure enough the little rabbit is doing very well taking care of himself. He is also having quite an extraordinary time. Soon more letters follow the first as Felix has one remarkable adventure after another. There is a trip into space, a journey to the North Pole, a warmer exploration in the Caribbean, an animal filled sojourn in a rain forest, and finally a visit to Australia. In each place Felix learns many things which he shares with Sophie through his letters. Furthermore each letter inspires Sophie to come up with interesting ideas and projects at home.
Full of exciting adventures and wonderful letters in envelopes that can be opened again and again, this Felix story is just as satisfying and as packed full of fascinating facts as the previous books. There is much to learn in this beautifully presented book and it is packaged in such a child-friendly way that the young reader ends up learning and absorbing a great deal without even knowing that he or she is doing so.
