Emily’s first 100 days of school

Rosemary Wells

Picture Book

Ages 4 to 6

Hyperion, 2000, 0-7868-1354-7

Emily is so excited on the first day of school that she quite forgets to cry when she leaves her mother. She has her own desk and school supplies, and she has a wonderful teacher called Miss Cribbage. Miss Cribbage tells her students that they are going to “make a new number friend” ever school day. They will write the number friend down in their number books and when one hundred days have passed they will have a special party.

And so Emily begins her number adventure during which she no only learns how to count but she also comes to realize that her world is full of numbers. School buses have numbers, clocks have numbers, and stamps have numbers. Emily discovers numbers in all kinds of places. The biggest pumpkin at the fair is thirty-three pounds, Papa takes a “forty winks” on the sofa, and on Thanksgiving Day it is fifty-eight degrees outside.

In no time at all one hundred number filled days have gone by and Miss Cribbage’s class celebrates.

Sometimes it is hard for young children to see why they need to learn about numbers. This splendid book will show them that the world is full of big and small numbers. There are so many wonderful things to count and we use numbers in our everyday speech all the time. Children can share Emily’s one hundred days with her and, in addition, they can have their own one hundred days activities and celebration.

Packed with wonderful illustrations, this information rich picture book will keep young readers busy for a good while.
