Ebb and Flo and the Greedy Gulls
Jane Simmons
Picture Book (Series)
Ages 3 to 5
Simon and Schuster, 1999, 0-689-85810-8
Ebb, Flo, Flo's mother, and Bird are all on the beach. They have brought along a picnic hamper and a blanket to sit on and everything is just about perfect. While the others are playing along the sea shore Ebb has a little nap. Then Ebb is woken up and she sees something quite dreadful - sea gulls are eating the wonderful picnic food. Whole sandwiches are disappearing down those great big yellow beaks. Ebb barks but the seagulls keep on eating until much of the food is gone
Poor Ebb. Not only are most of the sandwiches and other goodies gone, but Flo, Mom, and Bird all think that Ebb is the one who stole them. The injustice of it all! Then, it begins to rain and as Flo and Mom start packing everything up the true culprits reveal themselves, but is it too late for Ebb?
Ebb's little adventure will charm young readers who will feel great pity for the dog whose only crime was to be unable to stop a set of thieves from getting all the loot. Luscious use of color captures the serenity of the beach and then the change that takes place as rain falls and as the waves leap and crash against the rocks.
