Billy and his friends Finn and Dannie are very excited because an air show is touring their area. Living in a railroad work camp means that the children get very little opportunity to see the outside world and the entertainments that it has to offer. The children's enjoyment is somewhat cooled by the arrival of Philip, a dreadfully stuck up boy who is visiting the camp with his father, Mr. Mackey, who is one of the owners of the Great Northern Railway. Philip makes sure that everyone is well aware of his advantageous position and makes use of it at every opportunity. Billy does his best to be pleasant but with Philip this is an uphill job - the boy is simply insufferable.
Finn's uncle Ross is the star performer at the air show and the children are much enamoured by the dashing young man. They soon discover however that Ross has more than just a family secret to hide - something else is going on and it seems to have something to do with smugglers and maybe even with big city gangsters.
In the tradition of the Hardy boys, Nancy Drew, and the Famous Five, the author has created an exciting mystery adventure for young readers. We are kept wondering throughout whether Uncle Ross is the "good guy" or whether he is a criminal after all.
At the back of the book the author provides a very well written and interesting section full of background and historical information about the times described in the book.
This is the second book in the "Cascade Mountain Railroad Mysteries" series.
