Danger! Volcanoes
Seymour Simon
Non-Fiction (Series)
Ages 6 to 9
Chronicle, 2002, 1-58717-182-1
An erupting volcano is the most powerful force found in nature. It can spew out rivers of molten rock and enormous clouds of ash. It can shoot huge boulders high into the sky. Such eruptions can change the appearance of the environment for miles around; it can kill hundreds of people and cause millions of dollars in damage to homes and businesses; it can even change the weather of the planet. In short volcanoes are worthy of great respect and it is important that we should understand them as best we can. Perhaps if we understand what drives them, we will be better able to predict when they will next erupt.
In this excellent little book young readers will discover how forces deep in the earth produce the energy that cause volcanoes to erupt. They will become familiar with such terms as “magma,” “lava,” “the Ring of Fire,” and more. They will ‘meet’ some of the more famous volcanoes that have erupted over the years and will come to appreciate how destructive these phenomena are. They will also see how volcanoes come in many shapes and sizes and will learn that though volcanoes are destructive, they have also helped make our planet the beautiful and varied place that it is today.
Full color photographs and a map help make this a very engaging title about a fascinating subject.
At the back of the book readers will find four collectible cards that they can remove to play with or trade with their friends.
This is one of the titles in the non-fiction “SeeMore Readers” series.
