Coretta Scott was born in 1927. When she was still a very little girl the United Sates was plunged into what came to be called the Great Depression. Unlike so many other families, the Scotts were able to stay in their home and live off their land. Coretta had to do many farm chores, and she also picked cotton for white farmers to make a little money.

  The world that Coretta lived in was strictly segregated. Countless times, she personally experienced the racism that was the endemic in the United States at that time. Often what she saw and experienced made her angry, and she did not see what she could do to change the situation.

  Then, when she got older, Coretta met a man who would change her life and who would show her that there were ways to bring about change without resorting to violence.
