Claire and the bakery Thief

Janice Poon

Graphic Novel (Series)

Ages 7 to 10

Kids Can Press, 2008, 978-1-55453-286-5

Claire is very put out because her “whole life is changing.” She and her family are moving away from the city to go to live in small county town where her parents are going to open an organic bakery. Claire worries that there won’t be anyone who is her age “out there” to spend time with, and her mother isn’t happy about the move either.

The family has a rough start but the bakery soon takes off, acquiring a loyal group of customers. For a while, Claire cannot seem to find someone to be friends with, but then she meets Jet, who is so like Claire in many ways. Jet understands how Claire feels and sympathizes when Claire tells her that her parents are fighting a lot. Jet is also there for Claire when Claire’s mother suddenly disappears. How could her mother do such a thing and what will happen to the family now?

In this graphic novel style mystery Janice Poon not only captures the confusion that takes place when a family moves, but she also has an evident appreciation for a child’s feeling of loss when she sees her parents fighting. The troubles in the story are well balanced by happy moments, and by the presence of Bongo, Claire’s unpredictable and amusing dog.

This is a very promising first book in a new series.
