Charlie Small: Gorilla City

Charlie Small

Fiction (Series)

Ages 7 to 10

Random House UK, 2007, 978-0-385-61122-0

Charlie Small’s mum has been nagging him to play outside, and when his computer goes on the fritz (and after she suggests that he tidy his room) Charlie decides to go exploring. He gets a few supplies together, and then climbs into the raft that he uses to negotiate the stream that lies at the bottom of his garden.

Charlie quickly finds out that the stream is not the placid body of water that he is used to. The recent rainfall has turned the stream into a raging torrent, and soon Charlie finds that there is nothing he can do to control his precipitous progress to places unknown. Then a storm blows up without warning and Charlie is struck by lightening.

At first, Charlie does not think too much is wrong. He should be able to get home by the end of the day. Then an enormous river crocodile attacks him. There aren’t any crocodiles where Charlie lives. Where is he? Did getting stuck by lightning transport him to some distant land? Is it possible that he isn’t even in his own time anymore?

In this delightful adventure-packed story, Charlie Small takes his readers on a fantastic journey during which they will get to meet enormous crocodiles, gorillas, a steam-powered rhinoceros, and much more. Full of wonderful maps, sketches, and notes, this title is the first in what promises to be a highly entertaining series.
