Are you my mother?
P.D. Eastman
Picture Book
Ages 3 to 6
Random House, 1976, 0-394-80018-4
When the mama bird feels her egg jump under her one day she knows that her baby is going to hatch soon. In a great hurry she leaves the nest to find food for her baby. The problem is that soon after she leaves her baby does indeed hatch from his egg and more than anything else he wants his mother. Not being content with waiting for her the baby sets off to look for his missing parent.
His adventures begin when he falls out of the nest. Of course the baby bird cannot fly yet and even worse he has no idea what his mother looks like. Soon the baby bird is asking every animal, every thing in fact, if they are his mother. "Are you my mother?" he asks a dog, a kitten, a car, a cow, a boat and even the airplane flying over his head. Of course none of them are his mother.
In this funny and sweet picture book Eastman gives us a charmingly funny little bird who just won't quit. On and on he goes looking for his mother and with every mistake he makes we find ourselves hoping that someone helpful is going to come along soon to help him get home safe and sound.
This is one of the books in the "I can read it all by myself" series.
