My Daddy is a Giant
Carl Norac
Illustrated by Ingrid Godon
Picture Book
Ages 2 to 4
Clarion, 2005, 0-618-44399-1
For one little boy his dad seems to be enormous, huge, "a giant" among men and because he is so big and strong his dad can do all sorts of amazing things. For example when he stands up the clouds rest on his shoulders, and when he sneezes it is as if a hurricane swept across the land.
Perhaps best of all, the little boy's dad makes him feel safe when he holds him and the little boy knows that when he grows up he is going to be a "giant" just like his dad is.
Lots of little boys will be able to identify with the child in the simple picture book. They will understand what it feels like to have a giant for a father and will appreciate that for this little boy, his dad is his most favourite hero. Unusual outsized paint and pastel illustrations emphasize the smallness of the little boy and the giant like nature of his much loved father.
