Little Rabbit Runaway
Harry Horse
Picture Book
Ages 4 to 6 (Series)
Peachtree, 2005, 156145343-9
One day Little Rabbit gets into trouble and he is so upset with his parents for their scolding that he decides that his only choice is to run away from home. Soon he is off turning a deaf ear to the pleading of his parents. Little Rabbit is determined that he is never going to let anyone tell him what to do again.
As Little Rabbit is building his house he is joined by Molly Mouse. Soon the two little animals are creating a wonderful home for themselves using sticks and all kinds of things that they find lying about. The home they create is snug and just perfect for two little runaways. Then they start to have problems because Little Rabbit doesn’t want to be told what to do and Molly Mouse likes being bossy.
Little Rabbit soon discovers that being away from home and from his Mama is not as wonderful as he thought it would be. It isn’t long before he is wet, cold, dirty, hungry and missing his home and his mother very much indeed.
Little children who think that running away from home is a good idea will find Little Rabbit’s feelings of anger and frustration very easy to relate to. Their parents will find themselves smiling at the rebellious look on Little Rabbit’s face, seeing something very familiar there. Young readers will find this wonderful story comforting, amusing, and entirely engrossing as they follow along with the story and explore the detailed and beautifully executed illustrations.
