A is for America: An American Alphabet
Devin Scillian
Illustrated by Pam Carroll
Non-Fiction Picture Book
Ages 4 to 7
Sleeping Bear Press, 2001, 1-58536-015-5.
In this unique alphabet book Devin Scillian has found a format that makes the story of the United States exciting. He uses the letters of the alphabet to describe many of the different aspects of American life and history. Each letter has several words associated with it. For example F is for fireworks, flags, and "Fifty fine state capitals in fifty United States." These words are explained both in rhyming poetry on part of the page and in more detail in a border of each double page spread. Pam Carroll's full-color paintings complement and add to the tone of each page. "A is for America: An American Alphabet" is a wonderful introduction to the history and culture of America.

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
