America: A Patriotic Primer
Lynne Cheney
Illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser
Non-fiction Picture Book
Ages 4 and up
Simon and Schuster, 2002, 0-689-85192-8
In this beautifully illustrated alphabet type book the reader will find a wealth of information about America, its story, explanations of the principals that it was founded upon, biographies of the key personalities in its history, and much more. Some of the topics chosen are pleasantly surprising, and some are comfortingly familiar and reassuring in their message. For example the letter Y is described as "being for You and all you will be in this greatest of countries, the land of the free" and F "is for Freedom and the Flag that we Fly"
Every page in "America: A Patriotic Primer" is packed with Robin Preiss Glassers's highly detailed artwork: portraits, scenes, beautiful borders, frames, and decorated letters. Many of her pictures are annotated with interesting details about America and its people and with quotes written by famous Americans and others. The author Lynne Cheney has brought together enough fascinating information to keep the reader busy for a long time.
