It is hard to imagine what the world would be like if trains had not come along, for when they did the many countries really opened up. People were now able to travel around longer distances with ease, and to have access to services that were too far away to get to before. In America the railway made it even more possible for families to migrate west where new lands were opening up and where all kinds of opportunities waited for those who were not afraid to work hard.
This is the story of locomotives and how they evolved from being chuffing steam engines to the modern day machines which travel at great speed along a single rail. The first locomotives and railroads were built in the United Kingdom and when everyone saw the potential of these new inventions, other countries began to lay track and to build locomotives of their own. New innovations which made the engines faster, the rails better, and travel more comfortable quickly followed.
This is also the story of how trains changed the lives of all kinds of people and how these extraordinary machines made the world a better place for many.
In addition to the interesting main text and the excellent annotated photographs which fill the pages, readers will also find side bars on every page in which certain train related words and ideas are defined and explained.
This is one of the titles in the “Let’s Investigate” series.
