"Here is the train to Glasgow," here is Mr. MacIver the driver of the train, and here is the guard "that kindly man" who takes pity on a boy called Donald who is running late and hauls him onto the train. After this, what should be a quiet ride to the city on a train turns into a one full of "noise and commotion" for a box of chickens opens and its occupants get loose. Imagine having chickens and cocks running free all over a train if you can, and you will have a picture of what the situation was like. What on earth is the guard to do?
It is now that the guard's kindness to Donald is paid back in full, for it turns out that Donald has a trick or two up his sleeve when it comes to chickens.
With a chugging, locomotive style cumulative rhyme this is the kind of story which small children will love. First written in 1954, the poem has been a long standing favourite for generations of children and promises, with Paul Cox's exuberant and lively artwork, to delight countless children in the future.
