The Donkey’s Christmas Song
Nancy Tafuri
Board Book
Ages 3 to 5
Scholastic, 0-439-7418-3
Long ago a baby was born in a stable and in that stable, along with the baby and his parents, there were some animals. Each of the animals wanted to “welcome the baby” with their own little song. So, one by one, the cow, the doves, the sheep, the goats, the mice, and the yellow chicks came up to the manger and sang soft gentle little songs to the baby.
The donkey was afraid to sing a song to the baby for it was sure that its bray would be too loud for the infant. And yet, after all the other animals have sung their song, the donkey steps forward and he too gave his greeting of welcome – with delightful results.
In this soothing little board book the author has created a simple yet engaging little story about a donkey who learns that even he has something to offer the new baby. Young children will discover that gifts can come in all forms, and that all gifts are precious because of the thought that went into them.
