Christmas
Robert Sabuda
Pop-up Book
Ages 4 to 8
Scholastic, 2006, 0-439-84568-8
Most of us know the word ‘Christmas’ very well and when we hear it or see it written down images of Christmas trees, ornaments, presents, and Santa Claus come to mind. In this pop-up title the master paper artist, Robert Sabuda, has taken the word ‘Christmas’ and he has quite literally created images for every letter in this delightful word.
He begins with a pop-up picture of a candle complete with a flame which almost seems to glow. For the letter ‘H’ he shows us a “Home” which stands with its door open, decorated for Christmas and with a Christmas tree within. For the letter ‘S’ he has created a lovely pop-up snowflake, and for the letter “A” there is an angel with silver wings.
This lovely and beautifully created little book serves as a charming tribute to the images of Christmas which so many of us know and love, and it is small enough that it will fit nicely into a Christmas stocking.
