Tomorrow Billy is going to go to the big school and though he is excited, he is also nervous. There are so many things to worry about. What if he gets lost? What if he starts to cry? Billy goes outside to talk to his bird friends and he tells them all about his concerns. If only he could be a bird then he would not “have to worry about school at all.”

Then Billy sees a little sparrow sitting on the ground. The other birds are picking on it and Billy calls his mother to come to rescue it. They take the bird inside and Billy does his best to take care of the little creature for the rest of the day.

In the morning the little bird is strong enough to fly on its own, and Billy knows that it is now ready to “go into the big world – just like Billy.”

The first day of school can be a very frightening day for a small child. In this warming and comforting picture book Laurence Anholt shows children how one little boy deals with his fears. He also shows his readers what kinds of things happen on a first day of school, taking away a lot of the mystery and thus the worries that come with not knowing what to expect. The softly illustrated pictures are cheerful, and they are full of happy images of children at play, children making friends, and children discovering the joys of being in school.
