Ballet Sisters: The Duckling and the Swan
Jan Ormerod
Fiction
Ages 5 to 7
Scholastic, 2007, 0-439-82281-5
Sylvie’s big sister takes ballet lessons and she tells her mom and her little sister Sylvie that she is going to pretend to be a swan. She tells Sylvie that she can be the duckling. Together the sisters go to the dress up box and soon they are out in the yard suitably attired for ballet complete with makeup, tiaras, bead necklaces and more. When Sylvie’s big sister then announces that she is the fairy queen and that Sylvie is an elf, Sylvie is not at all happy and Mom has to come along to fix things.
On Saturday Sylvie’s big sister gets ready for her ballet lesson which includes braiding her hair. Sylvie tries to do her hair as well but ends up making a dreadful mess of it. So much so in fact that her big sister makes a pretend pair of braids for her from a pair of old tights. Now Sylvie feels a lot better and while her big sister is in her ballet class, Sylvie waits outside pretending to be a duckling, her pretend braids flapping about her head.
This beginning reader is perfect for young children who are just beginning to learn how to read on their own. Little girls who have big sisters will have no difficulty relating to Sylvie and her relationship with her big sister. Big sisters can be bossy at times, but they can also be helpful as well. An easy to read text, charming watercolor illustrations, and a three chapter format make this an excellent book for little girls who want to take that first step to read a book all by themselves.
