The Charlotte Years: Across the Puddingstone Dam
Melissa Wiley
Historical Fiction (Series)
Ages 8 to 12
HarperCollins, 2004, 0-06-027021-7
Change is in the air and there are many in Roxbury who are not at all sure that they like all the changes that are going on and that are sure to follow. Certainly Charlotte's mother is not happy about the new dam that is being built and many predict that once the dam is completed life in Roxbury will be quite different.
In spite of all this Charlotte, who is now eleven and almost a young lady, finds a great deal to capture her interest. It is 1820 and even in the little village of Roxbury which lies across the fens from the city of Boston, new things are happening all the time. She and her sister start attending a new school, and then most exciting of all, a new baby arrives to shake up their lives and to enchant them all.
Just when everything is looking at its rosiest things take a turn for the worst. The house on Tide Mill Lane is soon surrounded by a fug of stinking air, an aftereffect of the draining fenlands. It is soon clear to the entire family that they cannot remain in the home that they love so much. Somewhere new has to be found and a move has to be made. Added to this is the arrival of sickness to Roxbury and soon Charlotte's family is one of the many that is left stricken and grieving.
Can Charlotte reconcile herself to her loses and learn that change is inevitable to life? What is her mother's secret which seems to make her so strong, and so very dear and special.
The fourth book in the Charlotte Years series, this is a wonderful book which continues the story of Charlotte Tucker, the strong and determined little girl who grew up to become the grandmother of that world-famous writer and pioneer, Laura Ingalls Wilder.

ACTION ALERT!

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
