He was a simple man with a wonderful way with words and this is how this picture book tells his story, simply and with beautiful prose. You hear Abraham Lincoln tell the story of his life as if he were speaking to you, his heart open and honest. We discover that Abraham loved what little school learning he got and loved books, reading whenever he could. When he decided that he wanted to be a lawyer, Abraham realized that he had to be able to harness the power of words to reach out to people, to touch them. He took this skill and turned it to great use to become first a local politician and then a presidential candidate.
It is remarkable is to learn how sensitive Abraham Lincoln was. He had to keep a book of jokes on hand during the Civil War years to keep the tears at bay. The loss of life on the battlefields horrified the tall and gangly President who had to preside over so much bloodshed and misery.
With Wendel Minor's clear and often touching artwork, this is a picture book biography which truly gets to the heart of its subject. A historical note by the author provides further information about Lincoln. It explains how important the impact of Lincoln's Presidency has been on the history of the United States and on the efforts of many to see that slavery, and its many ramifications on society, became a thing of the past.
