Abadazad: The Dream Thief
J.M. DeMatteis
Fiction (Series)
Ages 9 to 12
Hyperion, 2006, 142310064-6
Kate is still having a hard time accepting that she is really in Abadazad, a place which until recently she was sure existed only in books. And yet here she is and she has discovered that her little brother Matty, who disappeared five years ago, is being held prisoner by the Lanky Man. Queen Ija, a powerful blue skinned three eyed beauty who rules Abadazad, has promised to help Kate to rescue her brother but the she does not seem to be in any hurry to do so. Kate cannot help wanting to be off at once and when the opportunity presents itself; she sets off for the Wretchedly Awful City where Matty is being held.
Kate is guided by a very peculiar but also very likeable character. His name is Wix and he is a living candle boy complete with a wick which can be lit when needed. Wix leads Kate through some secret tunnels out of the City of Inconceivable and into one of the canals that runs beneath the city. Then, to make things worse Kate and Wix are swallowed by a Wubbtale, a large whale-like creature.
Kate soon discovers that what seems like a calamity is not such a bad thing after all for inside the Wubbtale Uncle Watterlogged, who is Queen Ija’s uncle, is waiting for her. It turns out that Uncle Waterlogged is going to help prepare Kate for the ordeal that lies ahead of her.
Kate’s magical journal, complete with its beautifully colorful illustrations and its graphic novel style sections, will once again sweep readers off for a wild and highly unpredictable adventure. Not only can readers read Kate’s journal entries, but they can also see what she is experiencing and what is happening in other parts of Abadazad. Kate’s teenage voice with its definite teenage attitude comes through clearly and will resonate with young readers who are facing their own struggles with looming adulthood.

Action Alert

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) needs your help. The President's proposed fiscal year 2009 budget released in February eliminates the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program, which is the RIF Book Distribution Program. Unless Congress reinstates funding for this program, RIF will be unable to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation's youngest and most at-risk children. RIF serves 4.6 million children. Please click on the link below to visit the RIF Action Alert page so you can make your voice heard and support their efforts.
