A birthday for Bear

Bonny Becker

Illustrated by Kady McDonald Denton

Fiction (Series)

Ages 4 to 7

Candlewick Press, 2009, 0763637467

Bear does not like birthdays. He does not like what comes with birthdays: parties, balloons, cards, songs, or candles. So, instead of celebrating on his birthday, Bear is cleaning his house.

Then there is a knock on Bear’s front door, and when Bear opens the door, he sees Mouse. Mouse has an invitation (which he wrote) to Bear’s birthday party. Naturally, Bear is very annoyed. He has no interest in hosting a birthday party at his house. Very firmly, Bear sweeps Mouse out the door.

Mouse does not give up though. Oh dear me no. Mouse tries to deliver balloons, an extra large present, and a birthday card. Every single time he is shown the door. Bear is determined not have a birthday at all.

In this charming chapter book, Bonny Becker brings back her delightful duo, Bear and Mouse. Once again, Bear is grumpy and unwilling to change his ways, and once again Mouse tries to show Bear’s how to enjoy life a bit more.

Beginner readers will greatly enjoy this book, laughing at the expressive artwork as they read about Bear and Mouse’s birthday adventure.
