October 2008 - Volume 35

This Month’s Special Feature: Maps and Atlases - Today we have many technoloiocal innovations to help us find our way. We have GPS systems, fancy compasses, and satellite photos to look at. And we have atlases and maps. These latter two tools not only save us from getting lost, but they also help us better understand the world around us. The books reviewed in this collection are interesting, entertaining, and a joy to look at. Some also tell the story of mapmaking, and show readers how to read and to understand a map.

Editors Choice: Every month the editor picks one book that she feels is unique and worthy of special mention.

Season Features: Every season has its own special ‘flavor. In this monthly feature the editor brings together a collection of books which reflect the joys of the current season.

Monthly Spotlights: Every month TTLG highlights a children’s book series, a children’s book author or illustrator, and either a publishing house, or an organization which supports children, books, or literacy.

Special Feature: In this monthly feature a topic is explored through the world of books.

A Visitor For Bear by Bonny Becker and illustrated by Kady MacDonald

Denton - Bear does not like to have any visitors. In fact he dislikes visitors so much that he has a sign on his door telling potential visitors to keep away. Then one day someone comes to Bear’s door who will not be put off, and Bear discovers that visitors are not a bad thing after all. This is a wonderfully sweet and gently funny picture book that both children and adults will enjoy.
